Brittney vs. Car

I got a nice phone call at work this afternoon.  It appears that my oldest child tried to take on a car with her  my bike!  She was riding from school back to the house to get a change of clothes to go to a volleyball game.  She was on a blacktop road that doesn’t have shoulders and a car came up behind her.  Instead of just pulling off in the grass, she tried to cross the road to the other side so the car could use the lane.  Unfortuately, the car was already passing her and she ran into it.  She is ok for the most part, she got a scrape on her leg and a bruise on her hand, but nothing was broken and she luckily did not hit her head even thought the bike flipped

.I'd karate chop you, but it would hurt too much

When the guy she hit stopped, she made him take her and her bike home (about 1/2 a mile) wait for her to pick up a change of cloths and take her back to her highschool.  Luckilly he was a pretty nice guy and not a crazy mass murderer!  Anyway, when she got to school she still wanted to go to the game.

Needless to say, we went to the nearby clinic and had her hand x-rayed.  Nothing broken, just bruised, but that means no volleyball for 7-10 days.  I guess she was really lucky not to have broken her neck.

still smilin' what a brave girl

And of course, tonight was parents night at Declan’s school and the first Booster meeting for her highschool, so it was a jam packed night to begin with!

    I’m glad she’s OK!

Lesson #1: In a tangle between a bike and a car, the car will always win.

Lesson #2: Bikes have as much right as cars to use the road. As such, they can take up as much of a lane as they want, but they must also obey all of the rules of the road.

Lesson #3: Most drivers of cars think that nobody rides bike in “this” weather (rain, snow, sun, name it), so drivers are BLIND to bikes.

Lesson #4: Refer to Lesson #1. Be afraid, be very afraid!

I’m much more affraid of her having a car after this!!

Answer me this, was she trying go into a lane that was coming at her (eg, ride against traffic) in order to be kind to this car?

The right answer is no, but if it’s yes, assure her that having a crash with a car coming at her wouldn’t go nearly so well as this one… even if she were in a well-protected vehicle!

How is your bike, by the way? (Don’t want to be callous, but I’m just curious.)

Dad said the same thing. A bike has as much right of way as a car. Hope the pinky gets better soon. You can come recoup with grandpa.
He would like that. Love you.
