Bandera
While the kids were at Grandma’s this summer we got to take a little adult vacation. Really just a one day jaunt up to Bandera (Cowboy Capital of Texas). We did some hiking at the state nature preserve, then went for a horseback ride at a local dude ranch. Then we tooled around the little town for a bit and ate dinner.
We hiked up to the top of a mesa, supprisingly mesa’s are not bigger in Texas!
Â
The Flying R Ranch, which was one of many, many dude ranches in the area. We got there early, so we had a picnic lunch on the grounds and sat in the rocking chairs on the front porch.
This ride was definately nothing like the rides I took as a kid. Of course having a saddle can make a big difference.Â
Having a horse that is awake also makes a difference on the ride. This was Paul’s horse, it was sleeping (with him on it) before we made it leave the corral.

AWESOME!!! You guys look so relaxed & happy… I guess that’s what we have to look forward to when the kiddos all get educated & independent.
Can Mrs. Sommerer please confirm?? Actually in the few pics that have been posted of her, she looks like she hasn’t aged even one year since we graduated from high school, so that must be the case!

She hasn’t! She still looks like she did when we were kids. I guess that means we can’t be as old as we think we are.

So true!

So…. does that mean I’ll stop aging when the kids move out? Technically, when my youngest graduates from High School, I’ll be 42 and therefore could be “kidless” (in a perfect world).

I’m hoping it’s when the oldest graduates (that’s 39 for me) if I have to wait for the youngest, I might as well give up now and just start drawing on the wrinkles! (he starts 1st grade this year!)

Wow… you were like me and started right out of high school. Wasn’t exactly planned that way, but since we got the ball rolling… figured that we may as well go along for the ride. With three and each of them with a two year gap in between… not a bad thing. I have an 18, an almost 16, and an almost 13.

So, did you go around saying, “Dude” all the time on the ranch? Lloyd and I would have, and would have totally been kicked out, dude.

No, Lauren, you pays your money, you gets to say “Dude” as much as you wants. Now, they may have been sitting around the kitchen complaining about the strange people saying “dude” all the time, but what do you care!??

I’m not sure how often we said Dude, but I think the make you ride in a straight line to prevent too much talking…. probably like being in preschool.
