Poor Galen

My cat Galen is having a hard time this month.  I am going to ask anyone who reads this to pray for her because she is running out of lives faster than I can get her to the vet.

Three weeks ago we went to the vet for both of the cats which I mentioned then.  I said Galen had to go back to the vet the following week – well that was to have most of her teeth removed.  Apparently I should have been brushing her teeth better, because most of them were deteriorating from tartar and other gross teeth stuff.  (And no – I never brushed her teeth – who would?)  She still has the canine on the top and bottom and the ones in between these – all of the back teeth were removed.

Once she got home we went through the ordeal of getting her to take the medications.  One is an antibiotic the other a pain killer.  You would think she would be happy to take the pain killer – but not her.  But on the other hand, had she not been on the drugs, I think her second problem would not have occured.

We were trying to keep her in the house, but she sneeked out last Thursday morning because she was waiting at the door when I got home.  She seemed pretty normal and we did not notice anything strange until that night.  Brittney noticed that she was missing a piece of hair from her tail.  We had to go back to the vet on Saturday to check on the teeth thing, so I figured I would have them check out her tail while we were there.

On Saturday, when the vet saw her tail he picked it up to exam the place where the hair was missing and noticed that there was a great big gash about an inch from her bottom.  Her tail was actually seperating from her body.  He pinched her tail and she didn’t even notice it, which means the tail is dead.  So she had an emergency tail amputation to keep it from getting infected and caught on other things.

Here’s a picture of my new Minx cat

Wow–so did the tail die from the gash, or did the gash happen because the tail was dead? If so, how did the tail die? Do you give him dry food or wet food? I heard that dry food helps to keep the teeth in better shape, but maybe not, if that’s what he’s eating.

Man, bad news… pets get to be a part of the family, and it’s really tough when they’re not doing well.

BTW, I believe it’s Manx. My friend Shelley had one growing up.

Oh, poor Galen. I’m so sorry. When he swishes his tail now, does his whole butt wiggle?

Sorry guys – Galen is a girl.

The vet said he thought her tail had been run over and when she tried to pull away it destroyed the nerves at the base of the tail.

Also, this cat is really strange. She preferrs dry cat food to any table food (only meow mix for her) The only people food she would ever eat is tuna, so I don’t know what went wrong with her teeth. She is actually happier now because it does not hurt to eat and because she gets soft meow mix now!

And with the stub for a tail it is kinda weird.  One minute it looks like she has something there, then she moves a different way and it doesn’t even look like there is a stub.

That’s the funniest cat I ever saw. I had to laugh and yes I know it isn’t funny but it was so unexpected. Poor Galan.

I told you I just could not explain it over the phone!!

  6. Lauren Says:

Of course I am praying for your cat. Poor Galen.

Did you name her Galen as a method of birth control? My mom did that with our first cat; her name was Charlie. Mom figured that if we confused her, maybe she wouldn’t get knocked up! It worked, but I think a surgery at the vet’s office had more to do about that than the whole name thing…

Oh look, I made the blogroll! Thanks! :)

  8. Chris Says:

She was named after a Galen on a mini series. It was something to do with King Arthur, but I don’t remember what. (Lloyd thought I had named my cat after Galen Keek!)

I’d preferr kittens to all the trouble she’s having everywhere else. At least kittens don’t cost a fortune!!

Hey Christina, will you take another photo of Galen so we can see how she’s healing?
